One of the major complaints about stock TIVO and other PVR systems is their relatively small hard drives (Some as small as 13GB), and small recording time. The most popular and rewarding upgrade for any TIVO owner is upgrading the size of the hard drive, which will dramatically increase your recording time, up to 340 hours. Following this guide will help you to upgrade your TIVO and you will soon be enjoying the many extra hours of recording time that it brings you.

This guide is for all TIVO models, both standalone and DirecTivo combination receivers. Remember that in upgrading your TIVO, you will be modifying it from factory specs and as such there are no guarantees of the tools or instructions provided. If you run into a problem, you can make a post in our TIVO Upgrade Forum

Windows XP/NT/2000 Users: Do not boot into Windows XP/NT/2000 with your original Tivo drives attached to your computer as a Windows signature can be attached to the drive that will create problems. If you should need to boot into Windows during the upgrade, you will need to create a primary or extended FAT32 partition on your C: drive and know the name of the partition table. (In DOS, run fdisk -1 to display partitions) Then you can follow this upgrade guide, replacing the /dev/hda1(If applicable) with the name of the appropriate FAT32 partition. (IE /dev/hda5 if first extended partition, /dev/hda6 if second extended partition)

If you are a Member, A program like Bootit, which is available on the File Downloads page or a program like partition magic can create the necessary FAT32 partition. Or you can also aquire a small hard drive and format it as Fat32. If you need to have/create a DOS boot disk in order to run the qunlock program to unlock your Tivo drive, you can download a bootdisk from Bootdisk.com

Locked Drive If you have a Quantum or Maxtor drive and it is locked, (Reporting as 9-10MB) then you should unlock it using your QUnlock boot disk, which is available on the Download Area. Place your QUnlock bootable floppy in your disk drive and reboot to the floppy by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and waiting until it reports "no more processes".

Note: Do not use the QUnlock utility unless you are certain that you need to. Hard drive damage could occur if used inappropriately. Use only if your BIOS or Linux boot up report is reporting a 9-10MB drive size. It is generally only needed with older series 1 units.

At the A:\ prompt after booting to the QUnlock floppy, type

qunlock 2

This assumes that you have your locked Tivo drive connected as Secondary Master. If this is not the case, replace the numeral with the appropriate number to your configuration

0 for IDE Primary Master
1 for IDE Primary Slave
2 for Secondary Master
3 for IDE Secondary Slave

The unlocking procedure will only take a few seconds. After it is complete, replace the floppy with your MFS CD or Floppy and reboot to the Linux # prompt again. Again, ensure that all drives are now reporting their full size.

The following will be needed in order to upgrade your TIVO

  1. A TiVo
  2. New drive for your TiVo
  3. Power cable “Y” adapter (For Series 1 Hughes DirecTiVo models)
  4. Drive mounting bracket (For Series 1 Phillips or Sony standalone models)
  5. Torx #10 screwdriver
  6. Pentium™ based PC with at least 2 IDE channels and CD-ROM drive or floppy drive, 32MB of RAM, and PS/2 keyboard (Not USB)
  7. CD-R or CD-RW drive and CD-R or CD-RW blank media (Optional)
  8. MFS Tools upgrade CD or floppy

Step 1: Introduction to TIVO

TIVO receivers come in standalone or satellite integrated units. The standalone TIVO is capable of recording over the air broadcasts, cable, satellite or any other analog source. Satellite integrated units, such as DirecTivo can only record programming from the satellite provider. Aside from some cosmetic and operational differences, all TIVO units operate the same and can be upgraded to provide additional recording time. The new TIVO Series 2 and DirecTivo series 2 offer more RAM and faster processors than earlier models, in addition to USB ethernet ports and more for future features. If you do not currently own a TIVO, you simply need to weigh the options of what you are looking for. If you want a TIVO will all the bells and whistles, you can purchase a top of the line unit. If all you are looking for is a simple unit, then you have plenty of options as well. When upgrading, you will be retaining all your settings and seasons passes. Some upgrade configurations will also allow you to retain your recordings as well.

Latest Highlights
Who Do You Think You Are? NBC 8:00 pm  ET

Intrigued by a rumor that his paternal grandmother had white ancestry, football legend Emmitt Smith explores his family roots, traveling from rural Alabama into colonial Virginia and beyond as he uncovers a personal story that is more dramatic than he ever imagined.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit MAX 8:15 pm  ET

This ingenious 1988 movie won raves from critics for its skillful marriage of live action and animation. Bob Hoskins has the leading flesh-and-blood role as a private eye trying to clear a cartoon character of murder. It's the 'toons, however -- Roger Rabbit, his sultry wife, Jessica, and a huge cast of familiar favorites -- from Bugs Bunny and Betty Boop to Donald and Daffy Duck -- who are the real stars of this show.

Dog Whisperer NGC 9:00 pm  ET

Cesar tries to help a boy with a beloved Siberian husky whose once-sweet nature has transformed into such relentless hyperactive behavior that the dog can only be viewed in the backyard through the safety of a sliding glass door. Cesar also tries to help longtime veterinarian friend Dr. Rick Garcia with some of his more neurotic doggie patients in the new episode "A Dog and His Boy; Mobile Vet."

DogTown NGC 8:00 pm  ET

Animal care operations manager Jeff Popowich and Dr. Mike Dix travel to a Navajo community in Arizona, where they hope to spay and neuter dozens of dogs in two days to help reduce the exploding canine population crisis there. Back at DogTown, trainer Pat Whitacre tries to help Wilson, a Lab mix, get over his compulsive hole digging in the new episode "Dogs in Need."

House FOX 8:00 pm  ET

Dr. House has left the building. Worried that returning to his old job will cause him to revert to his old habits, House (Hugh Laurie) resigns and throws himself into a new hobby: cooking. With Foreman (Omar Epps) in charge, the team tries to diagnose a video game creator who would rather rely on the Internet than on his flesh-and-blood doctors. Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein also star in "Epic Fail."

Pale Rider AMC 8:00 pm  ET

Clint Eastwood returns to a form he knows well -- as verified by his "Unforgiven" Oscar wins -- as star and director of this 1985 Western. It's a respectable homage to countless sagebrush sagas that precede it, with Eastwood again playing a lethal stranger who helps oppressed townspeople. Michael Moriarty and Sydney Penny also appear.

Rush Hour 3 TBS 8:00 pm  ET

Sorry, Jackie. The pairing of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker worked -- sort of -- in the original "Rush Hour," but the formula started to fizzle in the first sequel, and things haven't improved over time. Chan is still far more fit than the average guy his age, but his prowess isn't what it was in 1998. And Tucker's shtick is also showing its age. Stick with the original.

The Warrior Class TMC 8:00 pm  ET

A young lawyer (Anson Mount) gets mixed up with a gangster (Jake Weber, "Medium") and a drug-addicted witness (Erica Leerhsen), as well as an eccentric, samurai-sword-wielding client (Dan Hedaya) in this generally well-acted but painfully formulaic 2004 legal drama. Jamey Sheridan and Robert Vaughn co-star.

Dreamgirls TNT 9:00 pm  ET

It took a long time for the stage hit to reach the screen, but writer-director Bill Condon's adaptation was worth the wait. Beyonce Knowles has her best film role yet as the central vocalist in a 1960s girl group, and Jamie Foxx also does sterling work as their manager. Still, the cast standouts are Eddie Murphy as a soul-music superstar and Jennifer Hudson, the "American Idol" former competitor who earned an Oscar for the film.

Kitchen Nightmares FOX 9:00 pm  ET

Now that's slow service. In this new episode, Gordon tries to turn around the fortunes of Casa Roma, an Italian eatery in Lancaster, Calif. The bar is a popular hangout, but the same can't be said for the restaurant. Gordon gets one clue when the food for his taste test takes so long to arrive that he falls asleep in the booth. Time to give the owners of this place a wake-up call of their own.

Hustle & Flow MTV 10:00 pm  ET

Pimps. That's about all a lot of people know about this film and as such, are turned off. But that's a sad thing, because Terrence Howard does an excellent job in the starring role as Djay, a pimp who wants out of the business. He tries to become a rapper, but the road to that dream has many large obstacles. Anthony Anderson, Taryn Manning and Ludacris co-star in the 2005 drama.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand STARZ 10:00 pm  ET

Batiatus (John Hannah) buys new slaves and contemplates selling Crixus (Manu Bennett) before word gets out that he has fallen off his game, since Spartacus (Andy Whitfield) has taken the title of Champion of Capua. Varro (Jay Courtney) has fallen back into his old gambling habits. Lucy Lawless and Viva Bianca also star in the new episode "Mark of the Brotherhood."

Kelly's Heroes AMC 10:30 pm  ET

The image of the military isn't quite flawless in this 1970 comedy-adventure, which casts Clint Eastwood as a soldier who hatches a World War II scheme to steal a fortune in Nazi gold. The cast of the lengthy but enjoyable caper also includes Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland and Carroll O'Connor. The film also introduced the hit song "Burning Bridges."
