Step 2: Purchase a large IDE hard
drive
- For your Tivo upgrade, you will need a quality computer hard drive.
Most modern IDE computer hard drives will work for TIVO hard drive
upgrade purposes. The slower 5400rpm drives will work as will the
faster 7200rpm hard drives. Generally, the faster 7200 rpm drives
will offer optimum performance due to their increased spindle
speed. Used computer hard drives will work perfectly fine,
provided that they offer the size that you are looking for your upgrade. If
you will be using a hard drive will existing data on it, you can
perform a simple format, although it is not necessary. It is not
necessary to perform a low level format or to even check the
drive for errors. The TIVO unit will do that for you and the
upgrade utilities will overwrite any existing data and partition
all available space on the hard drive. The TIVO software kernel limits
the drive usage at 137 GB of any drive installed on your
TIVO. The Exception to this is the newest Tivo Series 2, such as the DirecTV HR10-250 (High Definition) DirecTiVo, DirecTV R10 DirecTiVo, TiVo TCD540XXX standalone models and Humax TiVo standalone models, which no longer have a hard drive limit.
As most all TIVO units are designed to hold up to 2 hard
drives, this translates into 2 hard drives X 137 GB or a total of
274 GB of usable space. For most people, an 80GB, 100GB or 120GB
hard drive will be the choice. There is a cost difference between
the different sizes, however it is no longer dramatic, with a
quality 120GB drive usually costing no more than $30-40 more than
a 80GB drive.
- Determine your Tivo's factory configuration:
The first step of the Tivo upgrade process will be to determine if
your model of TIVO comes with a single or dual hard drive. Most
all Tivo models will hold up to 2 hard drives with a few
exceptions. Series 2 Tivos will require a bracket for a second
drive. The following table will help you to determine your
requirements for most models.

++ Denotes that DirecTV HR10-250 (High Definition) DirecTiVo, DirecTV R10 PVR, TiVo TCD540XXX standalone models and Humax TiVo standalone models, unlike all previously released TiVo models, can address drives larger than 137GB. These models can be upgraded by replacing the original A drive with a new larger upgrade A drive and/or by adding a new large Upgrade B Drive. A second drive bracket is required to add another hard drive.
These tables are as a general rule, there are a few exceptions,
you should remove the Tivo cover with a Torx driver and visually
inspect the drives to be sure. Some Tivo models will require a
special bracket for mounting a second hard drive. This can be
purchased through 9th Tee or Weaknees
Single Tivo hard drive upgrades: For most single
drive Tivo models, the easiest and most cost effective way to
upgrade is to continue to use your existing Tivo hard drive and
then simply add a larger hard drive as a B drive after creating a
backup of your drive A image. You can also use a single larger A
drive or combine 2 new larger A & B drives. If you will be
replacing your A drive, you must use a drive that is the same
size or larger than came originally with your Tivo. A drive A
replacement will also extend the life of your Tivo receiver.
Dual drive Tivo upgrades Factory dual drive
units will be able to use MFS Tools, which if you are a Member, are
available on our Download Area to convert your Tivo to a single
larger drive or to upgrade both your hard drives on your Tivo.
You can use a single large A drive, or replace either your A or B
drives with a larger drive or combine any 2 drive sizes as long
as your A drive is the same size or larger than came originally
with your Tivo.

Host Jeff Foxworthy's folksy charm and the unaffectedness of the resident fifth-graders -- not a junior prima donna in the bunch -- have made this game show, starting a new season tonight with a two-hour episode, a hit with viewers. Of course, as "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" reminded us, it's also great fun to watch grown-ups blow the answers to easy questions. Some, though, aren't so easy for folks 10, 20 or more years removed from elementary school.

Here's hoping people didn't get their telethon quota for the week from Jerry Lewis. This one, airing on ABC, CBS and NBC, is only an hour, but it packs a lot of star power into the time period and the cause: stepping up research into the causes of cancer and getting treatments to those who need them. Among the celebrities slated to appear are Jennifer Aniston, Lance Armstrong, Neil Patrick Harris, Hilary Swank and Sally Field.

Who says you don't learn anything from television? In this new episode, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is the subject of a TV show relating how he helped catch a serial killer. During a viewing party with the gang, Monk picks up a disturbing clue from the show: The third victim was killed by someone completely different. Traylor Howard and Ted Levine also star in "Mr. Monk's 100th Case."
The Astronaut Farmer 6:00 pm ET
Billy Bob Thornton gives a nicely understated performance in Michael and Mark Polish's gentle drama about a former NASA pilot who never reached his goal of going into space. He's determined to make up for that by building his own rocket and lifting off, much to the concern of government officials. Virginia Madsen ("Sideways") plays Thornton's wife. Bruce Willis and Bruce Dern also have supporting roles.

Sean Bean is no Rutger Hauer; then again, Rutger Hauer is no Cagney or Bogart. In other words, this 2007 remake of the 1986 thriller suffers from "making a copy of a copy" effect -- the quality only gets worse. And the idea that two road-tripping college students (Sophia Bush, Zachary Knighton) would offer an unsavory-looking stranger a ride in this day and age requires even more suspension of disbelief than it did in 1986. It's a scarier world out there, kids.

A couple and their three sons are shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island during a sea voyage from Europe to New Guinea. Despite wild animals and pirates, the family manages to make the most of its misfortune and create a personal paradise. Folks are betting on when certain celebrities -- including rogue cop "Dirty" Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) -- are going to die, and somebody is taking steps to ensure they do. But as Callahan fans know, nothing is ever as it seems in Harry's world. Patricia Clarkson also stars in this 1988 actioner.

They don't learn a lot, judging from the number of Lifetime movies in which they get in trouble. This isn't one of them, but it is a major downer. Based on a novel by Karin Cook, it tells the story of two Atlanta sisters (Alison Pill, Tamara Hope) coping with puberty, a new school and a new man (Scott Bakula, "Enterprise") in the life of their romantic, optimistic mother (Elizabeth Perkins). And then Mom gets cancer. Recommended only if you have something in your eye in need of flushing out.
