Step 8: Restoring MFS backup image
- You are now ready to verify your MFS tools backup image by
restoring to a new upgrade drive and placing in your Tivo to
test. The restore procedures will be the same for single or dual
drive backups.Remove your Tivo drives from your PC and connect
your new large drives to the Primary slave IDE cable. Power the
PC back up, remount the drive at the Linux prompt;
mkdir /mnt/dos mount /dev/hda /mnt/dos
- Those that have just finished backing up single drives will
already have their new large hard drive connected to the Primary
IDE cable on the PC. Restore the MFS tools backup image to your
new hard drive using ONE of the following commands in the
Linux prompt.
mfsrestore -s 127 -zpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak
/dev/hdb (Standard Command)
mfsrestore -i /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc
- The restore procedure will take less time than the backup and
you will offer you a restoration report and progress. Once you
are finished, you can unmount your drives;
umount -f -a -r
Then press Ctrl-Alt-Del and wait until it reports "no more
processes" and then you can power down.
**Note: If you are restoring an MFS Tools backup
image that is running Tivo software version 2.0 or below (Does
not apply to 2.0.1 or above), to a non-Quantum A drive, you will
need to add runideturbo=false to your rc.sysinit file in order
for the drive to boot in your Tivo. After unmounting and powering
down, you will need to reboot into the TivoMad floppy(See step 4,
other possibly required utilities), making sure your usual
Windows C: Drive is disconnected to prevent you from accidently
booting into Windows with your Tivo drives attached and that your
Tivo drive is connected as Primary Slave. Once the TivoMad boots
up and asks you the first question(Do not answer it), type
Ctrl+C, which will exit the script and bring up the Linux prompt,
where you type the following command to make the adjustment;
mad/edit_bootparms hdb -i
Once complete, it will return you to the Linux prompt without any
output.

Step 9: Install new Tivo drive to
test
- After restoring your backup image and powering down your
computer, jumper the drive to Master and reconnect the new
upgraded drive to your Tivo receiver, plug it in and wait for it
to boot up. If the unit sticks on the powering up screen, verify
the the IDE cable is securely connected and that the drive is
properly jumpered to Master. If you are running Tivo software
version 2.0 or below and using a non-Quantum hard drive, it may
also stick if you did not make the runideturbo=false adjustment
at the end of step 8. If the Tivo goes black or shuts down
prematurely, try pressing the power or Tivo button to exit
standby mode.
- You should now test your Tivo to verify that it is working
properly. If you check the system information screen, do not
expect the Tivo to recognize the additional capacity of the drive
at this point. The recording capacity will still be identical to
your original Tivo drive until your expand it in the next step.
Any recordings you had on your original drive will display in now
showing, however they are not actually present on the drive and
so will not play. If the Tivo is functioning properly, you have
now verified the integrity of the drive image and the backup on
your C:Drive will serve as a backup if you ever run into problems
or wish to upgrade again in the future. Now Power down your Tivo,
unplug it and remove the drive.

**Series 2 Tivo Warning For owners of Series
2 Tivo units, when installing or removing hard drives within the
Tivo unit, take care not to dislodge or disturb the flat white
ribbon cable running from the front panel of the Tivo to the
motherboard. Powering up your Tivo with this disconnected can
damage your Series 2 Tivo. If you think you may have disturbed
it, ensure that it is firmly connected before powering up your
unit.
