Step 11: Reinstall Tivo drive(s)

  1. Your backup procedures are now complete and you are ready to remove the new drives from your PC and reinstall them in your Tivo unit. Power the PC down by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. Once you see the computer BIOS screen, switch the power off and wait until the drives stop spinning. Disconnect the new large drives from your PC and label them accordingly as "A" and "B" drive(s). (If applicable)

  2. Ensure that the jumper settings are correctly set on the new drive(s). Your new A drive will be jumpered to Master and your new B drive (If applicable) will be jumpered to Slave. Make sure your Tivo is unplugged during the reinstallation. Use caution not to touch the power supply. Connect the drives to the mounting bracket in your Tivo, making sure that they are firmly secured and are spaced apart to allow adequate air flow. Directv with Tivo users should only need an extra set of screws to mount a second drive, which are available at most any computer store. If you are adding a second drive to a factory single drive Tivo, you can use felt furniture pads on the bottom of the new drive and as a spacer between the 2 drives. You can then secure the new drive using plastic cable ties or zap straps. This method secures the drive and provides good airflow. Refer back to Step 3 if your Tivo does not have a free IDE or power cable and you need to add an additional one. Ensure that all other components are reconnected, including the fan.

  3. After the Tivo boots up, you should go to the system information screen and verify your expanded hours on your new drive. If the Tivo sticks on the powering up screen, verify that all the IDE and power cables are fully connected and the drives are jumpered properly. If you are running Tivo software version 2.0 or below and using a non-Quantum hard drive, it may also stick if you did not make the runideturbo=false adjustment at the end of step 8. If the Tivo goes black or shuts down prematurely, try pressing the power or Tivo button to exit standby mode.

  4. Those that did not copy their existing recordings to their new drive(s) will notice that their old programs are listed in Now Showing, however they will not play since they are not actually present on the new drive(s). You can simply delete these to get rid of them.

  5. As a precaution, it is also a good idea to burn a copy of your tivo.bak MFS backup to a CD ROM in case of data loss on your C: drive.

Locked Drive If you have a Quantum or Maxtor drive and it is locked, (Reporting as 9-10MB) then you should unlock it using your QUnlock boot disk, which is available on the Download Area. Place your QUnlock bootable floppy in your disk drive and reboot to the floppy by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and waiting until it reports "no more processes".

Note: Do not use the QUnlock utility unless you are certain that you need to. Hard drive damage could occur if used inappropriately. Use only if your BIOS or Linux boot up report is reporting a 9-10MB drive size. It is generally only needed with older series 1 units.

At the A:\ prompt after booting to the QUnlock floppy, type

qunlock 2

This assumes that you have your locked Tivo drive connected as Secondary Master. If this is not the case, replace the numeral with the appropriate number to your configuration

0 for IDE Primary Master
1 for IDE Primary Slave
2 for Secondary Master
3 for IDE Secondary Slave

The unlocking procedure will only take a few seconds. After it is complete, replace the floppy with your MFS CD or Floppy and reboot to the Linux # prompt again. Again, ensure that all drives are now reporting their full size.

Congratulations!
